Children's National Medical Center ECMO & Advanced Therapies for Respiratory Failure - Welcome
The 25th Annual Children's National Medical Center Symposium on ECMO & Advanced Therapies for Respiratory Failure
Keystone, Colorado, USA       February 22 – 26, 2009

Overview:
CNMCThe winter ECMO conference is a forum for the presentation and discussion of current therapies and techniques in Extracorporeal Life Support and advanced therapies for respiratory failure.

Northwestern This conference will address the educational needs of Pediatric Healthcare Workers involved in care of the neonatal or pediatric patient in respiratory &/or cardiovascular failure. State-of-the-art presentations on the use and latest technologies related to Neonatal and Pediatric ECMO, nitric oxide, and state-of-the-art ventilation techniques will be presented. Didactic presentation will be combined with panel discussions, and short research presentations to enhance the audiences knowledge in the area of the latest treatments for respiratory &/or cardiovascular failure, while enhancing their knowledge in the latest known in the pathophysiology of disease in this population. Outcome data for neonatal and pediatric respiratory failure patients will also be presented. Limitations and complications of new therapies will be discussed by experts in the field.

Who Should Attend:
The conference is focused on the educational needs of following healthcare providers taking care of the neonatal/pediatric patient in respiratory &/or cardiovascular failure: Neonatologists, Pediatric Critical Care Physicians, Pediatric Surgeons, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeons, Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses, Pediatric Intensive Care Nurses, Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Therapists, and Pediatric Cardiovascular Perfusionists.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be better able to:

  • Discuss the latest equipment and new uses of extracorporeal support
  • Discuss safety issues related to ECLS, i.e., how to measure outcome and intervene to prevent adverse events
  • Discuss the latest approaches to lung transplant and use of ECLS
  • Discuss the latest knowledge on the molecular and cellular pathophysiologic events involved in the development of persistent pulmonary hypertension
  • Discuss recent controversial issues in extracorporeal support, proving evidence for clinical treatment modalities
  • Discuss the therapeutic measures needed for the patient on ECMO for cardiac support
  • Discuss the known outcome of the ECMO patient
  • Discuss the latest knowledge on the treatment of the older child in respiratory failure
  • Discuss the appropriate use of pain and sedation medications in the acutely ill patient
  • Discuss the known treatment for septic shock
  • Discuss the potential use of pediatric cardiac support devices other than ECMO
  • Discuss the approach to the cardiac patient requiring ECLS support, best support method, coagulation issues, catheter issues.
